Osun Hospital Detains Newborn Over ₦700,000 Medical Bill

News

An Osun State hospital has reportedly detained a newborn baby for more than three months due to an unpaid medical bill exceeding ₦700,000.

The baby’s mother, 21-year-old Iqmat Yinusa, has been unable to take her child home since delivery, as hospital authorities insist the bill must be cleared before discharge. Despite the newborn being medically fit, he remains confined to a hospital cot.

Sources say the debt accumulated from delivery-related complications and postnatal care. With limited financial support, the young mother has struggled to raise the required amount.

The incident has drawn public outrage, with rights groups condemning the practice as inhumane and a violation of fundamental human rights. Calls are mounting for urgent intervention by the Osun State government and relevant agencies to secure the baby’s release and address the issue of patient detention over unpaid hospital bills.
