A Nigerian lady has stirred conversations online after lamenting bitterly about the outrageous cost of men’s clothing in today’s market.
In a trending video, she expressed her shock at how men’s fashion items, particularly shirts, have quietly become extremely expensive, leaving women frustrated when it comes to buying thoughtful gifts for their partners.
According to her, society often accuses women of being materialistic and extravagant with fashion, yet the reality on the ground shows that men’s clothing is now far more costly than many female fashion items. She stressed that while women may shop for affordable and stylish dresses at lower prices, men have to contend with skyrocketing costs for even the simplest outfits.
She gave a striking example, noting that a single men’s shirt now goes for between ₦200,000 and ₦300,000 in some stores. This, she explained, makes it nearly impossible for many women to show affection in a romantic way by gifting their partners nice clothing, as the prices are simply beyond reach for the average person.
In her words:
“If una dey do birthday now, we go carry singlet and boxer give una, e go be like say we no value una. But see your clothes, cutting neck in the market. One shirt is ₦300k, ₦200k. Why na? It’s too much yo. It reach my own turn to dey romantic, na then your clothes come dey expensive.”
Her complaint has since sparked reactions online, with many agreeing that men’s clothing prices have indeed shot up in recent times, while others argued that cheaper options still exist for those willing to explore.
Regardless, the lady’s outburst has opened a wider conversation about the rising cost of fashion in Nigeria, gender expectations when it comes to gifting, and the pressures both men and women face in maintaining a stylish appearance despite economic challenges.
