A Nigerian man has stirred up massive debate on social media after boldly stating that the majority of men do not end up marrying the women they genuinely like or desire.
According to him, “80% of men don’t marry the women they like. They marry the women who can hold them down.”
Expanding on his point, he explained that while many men may admire, love, or feel strongly attracted to a certain woman, when it comes to making the lifelong decision of marriage, they often settle with another woman who possesses the traits and qualities they believe will sustain a stable home.

He further argued that this mismatch between desire and decision is one of the hidden reasons behind the increasing rate of divorce. In his words, when the very character or supportive qualities that made a man marry a woman begin to fade or change, the man can easily decide to walk away. However, if he had married someone he genuinely liked and connected with, leaving would not come so easily.
The man’s statement has since gone viral, sparking heated arguments online, with many people agreeing while others strongly disagree.
