The Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as the Amotekun Corps, has brought a man before a Magistrates’ Court in Akure on charges of rape and assault. The defendant, Abiola Awonugba, who lives in the Ijoka area of Akure, faces two counts related to unlawful sexual intercourse and causing physical injury.
According to the prosecutor, O.F. Akeredolu, the alleged crimes took place on August 23, 2025, around 3:30 p.m. at a residence in the Ijo-Mimo area of Ijoka Road, within the Akure South Local Government Area. The prosecution alleges that Awonugba not only raped a married woman, but also wounded her husband, identified as Mr. Fasore, during the incident.
The defendant’s plea was not taken during the court session. The prosecutor stated that the alleged offenses are in violation of Sections 357, 358, and 335 of the Criminal Code Law of Ondo State, 2006. These sections deal with a range of serious criminal acts, including rape and assault.
Following the presentation of the charges, the prosecutor requested that the court remand the defendant in a Correctional Centre. This is a standard procedure to ensure the defendant remains in custody while the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) provides legal advice on the case.
In response, the defense counsel, Kehinde Osadugba, requested an adjournment. He stated that the additional time would allow him to file a counter affidavit to the prosecutor’s application for remand. This is a legal document that would present arguments against the defendant being held in custody.
After hearing both sides, the presiding magistrate, Tina Ayodele-James, ordered that Abiola Awonugba be remanded in custody. She adjourned the case until September 16, when she is scheduled to rule on the formal remand application. This decision means the defendant will remain incarcerated until the court’s next session.
