A major dispute has erupted between two of Nigeria’s most prominent traditional rulers, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi. The conflict centers on a title recently conferred upon former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.
According to a statement released by the Alaafin’s palace, Oba Adeyemi has issued an ultimatum to the Ooni, demanding that he revoke the newly bestowed title of ‘Okanlomo of Yorubaland’ on Sanusi within 48 hours. Failure to comply, the statement warns, will result in unspecified but dire “consequences.
