A horrific attack by unknown gunmen near Federal Polytechnic Oko in Anambra State has left many dead and an unknown number of citizens kidnapped. The assault, which began on Thursday evening, June 19, targeted lodges around the Total petrol station in Oko, with assailants opening fire indiscriminately.

Students of Federal Polytechnic Oko, who filmed the incident from their lodges, captured the gunmen arriving in two cars. Their videos also depict the grim aftermath, showing multiple victims shot and lying in pools of blood. While some were confirmed dead, others were seen struggling in agony, but the ongoing gunfire prevented anyone from providing medical assistance.

Among the confirmed fatalities is a local barbecue vendor. Unconfirmed reports also suggest that some lecturers may be among those abducted.

The motive behind the attack is currently unclear, but allegations suggest a connection to a new checkpoint recently established by the “Operation Udo Ga Achi” security outfit near the Total petrol station.

Reports indicate that the addition of this checkpoint to existing ones in the vicinity had already led to heightened tensions in the area.
