Etimbuk Daniel, the immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) president of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), has reportedly died at an NYSC orientation camp in Enugu State after complaining of a headache.
His reported death has sparked concerns and calls for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly allegations of inadequate medical attention at the camp.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has reportedly called for a thorough investigation into claims that Daniel was given fake medication and could not access hospital treatment in time.
The allegations have raised questions about the quality of healthcare available to corps members at orientation camps and the procedures in place for handling medical emergencies.
Daniel’s death has also renewed concerns about the safety and welfare of prospective and serving corps members during the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.
As calls for accountability grow, stakeholders are expected to seek clarification from the relevant authorities regarding the circumstances leading to his death.
However, the allegations concerning the medication he received and the reported delay in accessing hospital treatment have yet to be independently established. A comprehensive investigation would be necessary to determine what happened and whether any negligence occurred.
