Trump argued that the pollution has cost the U.S. billions of dollars and insisted that those costs should be added to the tariffs already imposed on Canadian imports. He also said he planned to speak with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney about what Canada intends to do to address the issue.
Canada has rejected the criticism, with officials pointing to billions of dollars already invested in wildfire prevention, forest management, and emergency response. They also emphasized that the two countries have a long history of cooperating in fighting wildfires.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford responded by urging U.S. leaders to offer assistance instead of criticism, noting that Canadian firefighters have repeatedly helped battle wildfires in the United States during past emergencies.
Experts say this year’s severe wildfire season has been fueled by hot, dry conditions linked to climate change. Hundreds of wildfires remain active across Canada, with smoke continuing to spread into parts of the U.S., triggering air quality alerts and health warnings for millions of residents.
